World and Domestic Developments to Watch in the Next 100 Days
There are a number of stories developing right now both domestically and around the globe that should have an impact on the fledgling presidency of Barack Obama. How he deals with these challenges will most certainly act as a policy and resolved barometer.
- Russian Prime Minister, Vadimir Putin, is dropping hints that he may try to take over the presidency in Russia once again. President Dmitry Medvedev is pushing, after only six months in office, for an extension of the presidential term from two 4 year terms to two 6 year terms. Is true democracy in Russia on the decline? Will Medvedev continue his loyalty to Putin or is he attempting to extend his tenure in opposition to Putin? How will developments in the oil and gas rich Russia impact US foreign policy?
- The United States will borrow 920 Billion dollars over the next 20-weeks. What impact will that have on Inflation? Can we avoid Carter era inflation and stagnant growth numbers? Who will lend us this money and what strings will be attached to the loan?
- Senator Joe Lieberman met with Harry Reid, the leading Dem in the Senate. Looks like the Dems are getting ready to punish Lieberman for his support of John McCain by removing him from his chairmanship of the Homeland Security committee. How will this bode for the "end to partisanship"? Will Lieberman defect to the Republican side of the isle or continue to caucus with the Dems? Will Obama step in and defend Lieberman?
- The Pakistanis have already publicly directed comments toward Barack Obama demanding that missile strikes and incursions into their lawless frontier stop immediately. How will the US respond under Barack Obama? Will we further strengthen our resolved to eliminate Taliban and Al Qaeda or cave to Pakistan?
- How will the Prop 8, anti-gay marriage fight impact Obama's domestic policy? Will he appoint judges that will over turn the voice of the electorate or uphold traditional values and buck his far-left supporters?
- How will Obama deal with a Congress ready to start massive domestic "stimulus" plans. Will he support Pelosi's "permanent" stimulus (i.e. January redistribution checks) to the lower income earners? Or stick with the main plank of his campaign and provide the tax cuts to "95%" of working Americans?
Today, President Elect Obama will get his first top secret national security briefing. I wonder how knowing what is really going on behind the international curtains will effect his policy making? Will he walk out of that briefing with a new respect for the external factors that drove the Bush policy?
Stay tuned, buckle your safety belt - we are in for a bumpy ride.
