School Choice for the Obama Girls - But what about those stuck in the DC Schools? What for them?

Well, the Obama's did exactly what I would have done, would that I could afford it.  They have announced that their daughters will not be attending the local Washington D.C. public schools but instead shall attend the exclusive Sidwell Friends school.  Now many will call this the height of hypocrisy, and there is indeed a insidious vein of hypocrisy involved, but I don't blame Obama one iota.  Barack Obama is completely opposed to any kind of school choice program, including vouchers, which would create a micro-level free market for public schools.  This free market approach would force schools to be more competitive and fight to attract students.

Yet, when faced with placing his children in a, as Jonah Goldberg of the National Review calls it, a "hell hole", Obama, able to afford the $28,000+ per year tuition (per child), did the right thing and put his kids in the best school he could afford.  I applaud his decision, even though his daughters tuition and books will cost more than I clear in a year, but I am appalled that he would not give every parent that same opportunity.  That elitism is the core of what I find most offensive with those on the left.  They are all for opportunity for themselves, but when an option is on the table for a person to choose that opportunity for themselves, the educational establishment balks and they decry extending the same freedoms to others.

Most people can not afford $60,000 a year to send their kids to grade-school and middle school. According to the US Census Bureau the average salary for a family in the US is $50,233.00.  This is not a major sacrifice for a millionaire, but there are few families out side of the power elite in D.C. that can afford that kind of expense.  What is "fair" about that?  What is "patriotic" about that?  If that same student, sentenced to a sub-standard education, could take out the close to $25,000 per child that the D.C. public schools spend, that would go a long way toward finding a quality education and leveling the playing field for average families to provide the same opportunities that the wealthy have.

So, no I don't blame Obama for giving his little girls the best possible educational opportunities he can find and afford, but I do blame him from stopping the rest of us from doing the same.  You want to talk about injustice, forcing a family into a failing school while spending enough per-pupil to provide freedom of choice and a quality educational product is heinous.

It has always troubled me that the "pro-choice" folks want us to be able to choose to kill a child before he is born, but not choose how to educate those whom we allow to survive!
