One in Five Dollars are consumed by the Federal Government

The government is now not only consuming an unhealthy percentage of the nations productivity, but is also directing (i.e. dictating) a larger and larger percentage of economic activity.   With the complete nationalization of the banking industry, the nationalization of the nations largest insurer, the state ownership of many, if not most, home mortgages and the very real specter of government run health care around the corner, we see better than 50% of our economic activity directly or indirectly controlled by the Government.

Whether or not you can directly feel the hand of oppression as a result of this control, it is pervasive.  This is not what these United States were created for.  The government is there to serve us, not the other way around.  We are to be controlling the government, limiting their activity, size and charter, not the other way around.

The following are some accurate charts of historical government spending, taxation and budgeting trends for you to consider.

Here is what I proposed:

1.  A constitutional amendment limiting government spending to 10% of GDP unless we are involved in a declared war.
2.  A constitutional amendment banning deficit spending in all forms.
3.  The repeal of the 16th amendment and a return to the original constitutional mandate for raising federal revenue via apportionment.

What do you think is the right thing to do?  Are you comfortable with the government running over half of the economic activity in the country?  Do you think that you are getting fair value for your Federal Income taxes?  Do you trust the government to make sound decisions that benefit all Americans?

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the Public Treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits from the Public Treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy always followed by dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been two-hundred years. These nations have progressed throught this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to great courage; from courage to abundance; from abundance to complacency; from complacency to apathy; from apathy to dependence; from dependence back again into bondage.”

—Alexander Fraser Tyler, 1700
