Cards and Letters on Diversity from a White Heterosexual Christian Male
Okay! Okay! I get it...
I have received a bevy of critical emails about my post yesterday accusing me of everything from outright racism to homophobia. So give me a minute to explain before you flood my email with more calls for my exile to Saudi Arabia.
I do not care what race, religion or sexual orientation you claim. Period. My problem is that these meaningless characteristics have become the prime traits that lead in describing someone who has been elected or nominated for public office. This de facto standard has marginalized competency and achievement to the detriment of race, religion and orientation "equality".
I don't care (and neither should you) if a nominee is an African American, a Chinese American, a Gay American or an Italian American. The standard of equating some special merit points to selecting a Black Man over a White Man or a Gay Woman over a Straight Woman is insane and further undermining our societies integrity and unity. It is a grotesque double standard that is hurting America. You diversity honks better start looking for the most qualified individual for the job, not the most qualified-fill in the blank. How denigrating to the nominees! How denigrating to the American people!
What bearing does ones sexual orientation have on their qualifications to perform a job? If it really has any weight why don't we tell the race, religion and sexual orientation of all nominees?
Joe Biden, White heterosexual male.... What importance do any of these irrelevant classifications have on Joe's ability to perform the job he was nominated for?
Why did Carol Browner's skin color or Nancy Sutley's bedroom preferences become important?
If Carol Browner was the best choice and most qualified nominee for the EPA Administrator, then GOD BLESS HER! But if she was only the best choice for an African American EPA Administrator, than shame on Obama and woe to America's future. Her skin color should not have an iota of impact on her selection, any more than my pasty whiteness should have an impact on my selection for any job or post. If her skin color was not a factor in her selection than it should not be part of the announcement or news story. PERIOD. If Nancy Sutley's gayness makes her better qualified to be lead White House Council on Environmental Quality, explain it to me, or keep Ms. Sutley's sexual preference out of the press release and explain how and why she if the most qualified American for the post.
So hold your nasty emails and accusations and stop dividing our nation with inane "diversity" banter. Or at least spread the descriptive wealth equally and start naming your BIG THREE (Race Religion and Sexual Orientation) for everyone.
With Respect,
Tony
