DHS Report is Alarming

The report from DHS' Office of Intelligence and Analysis defines right-wing extremism in the U.S. as:

"...divided into those groups, movements and adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups) and those that are mainly anti-government, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely. It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration."

So those who believe that our Constitution was well conceived and sufficient to guarantee our liberties, those who adhere to the 10th amendment and believe in states rights over a lumbering federal government, those who have strong moral convictions concerning the sanctity of life are lumped in with the KKK, neo-fascists and other racist groups by our own employees!  The same group of jackbooted goons who refused to call an Islamic Extremist Terrorist act what it is, and settle for "man made disaster" now have lumped any and all Patriots into a class of dangerous "right-wing extremist".

Right-wing extremists are real. The Oklahoma City bombing of 1995 was the work of a true right-wing extremist. Eric Rudolph is a legitimate terrorist inspired by far-right views. There are also real left-wing extremists. Think the ELF.

I am reassured the government is concerned about all potential terrorist threats (Islamic, right, left, whatever). There is no evidence that citizens with right of center views are being watched. Destruction of free speech and the dissolution of the right does not seem to be the point of the report.

Don't forget Obama just took office 3 months ago. This report was probably written by the same bureaucrats that have been pursuing anti-terrorists initiatives for the last 8 years of the Bush administration.

As long as your dissatisfaction with the government drives you to attend tea parties and not to start stockpiling fertilizer and gasoline, I wouldn't worry too much about Big Brother.

There is no doubt that "right-wing extremist" are real.  The debate is the government's definition, and their current tact on determining who is, and what constitutes "extremist".

This report was compiled by the same DHS goons that operated under Bush.  The same goons that brought us the "Patriot Act".  I have the same problem with this as I do with the Missouri report that made those who support third party candidates as potential threats.

When free speech, free association and open dissension is deemed a threat... we are heading in the wrong direction.

I agree that the Missouri report is a huge mistake, but how is this report similar? This report simply points out that right-wing extremists may pose a terrorist threat. That is a true statement. Right-wing extremists have committed terrorist acts before and they may again.

What in this report makes you think the government is doing anything other than performing due diligence and assessing all potential threats?

The report does not define right-wing extremism in my mind. It simply lists traits that extremists may exhibit. Some extremists may be inspired by opposition to abortion. That doesn't mean that the government thinks all anti-abortion groups are extremist. I don't think there is any reason to believe the government will be run COINTELPRO-like operations against anti-abortion groups anytime soon.

        Curious of your thoughts.

How DHS defined "right-wing extremism" amounts to "political profiling," the DHS is using people's political views to assess an individual's susceptibility to terror recruitment, and their "threat" to the current power structure.  If you are a staunch defender of the Second Amendment, or a staunch supporter of the pro-life position the DHS has singled you out for closer scrutiny.  This kind of scrutiny is a slippery slope toward intimidation and repression of dissident (i.e. opposing views of the current ruling oligarchy) voices.  The report could have come from the McCarthy era if you changed a few labels around.

The singling out of war veterans is offensive and diminishing of the sacrifice and oath they took to uphold the Constitution.  If the current and rescent past administrations spent more time focusing of the constituionality of their actions, they would have little to fear from their employers (you and I).

The preamble of the U.S. Constitution makes it clear what rights a people have when the government no longer represents the people. Right now the government is doing all they can to seure a lasting "democratic" majority and abandoning the voice of the other 48% of the citizenry who do not agree with internationalism, increased governmental intrusion into private business, social engineering and redistributive policy tragectery.
